PERC%NT

HI, my name is PERC%NT and I'm a newly coming singer songwriter from South KOREA! I'm majoring in r'n'b and band music. And I also work as a composer, write songs for idols and so on. I'm making a lot of music.
#deerzone:
You've got a really interesting stage name. What does it mean?
PERC%NT:
Well... I actually wanted my stage name to be just a symbol, but one day I found out that there wasn't any artist named "Percent". So my company and I, we thought of using this name and putting the "%"-symbol instead of "e" which may seem a little bit weird but kind of innovative and cool at the same time. The symbol represents two sides of myself. When I'm not on stage I'm actually shy and can't talk really well but when I'm on stage I perform passionately and do enjoy performing. So the company suggested thinking of it as one part is me in usual life and another part is me on stage. And you're kind of looking at yourself in the mirror. That's the meaning of my stage name.
#deerzone:
So you're a songwriter, right? Is there any artist whom you'd like to write a song for?
PERC%NT:
Right. I luckily had good chances to work with other talented artists. I did a remix for one of Red Velvet's songs, and this year, I wrote a song for Kim Bum Soo, a well-known Korean singer. It was definitely honor to work with him as he is a legend in the R'n'B genre.
#deerzone:
Please, tell us about your remix version of "Dumb Dumb". What was the main idea of the MV and so on?
PERC%NT:
As for the MV we worked with a producer from our company and we had a lot of discussions. That was actually my first MV and I didn't get that much screen time. Our PD just said "Do whatever you want" so I started dancing and he was like "wow you can dance!". So the whole MV just turned out to be a video of me dancing (laughs). He asked me to dance over and over again and then made a nice music video out of those scenes. And as for the remix itself it was made during the TV program called "Snowball Project" which I participated in. I met up with Red Velvet and the song producers for that. Of course it was part of the show but they gave me a chance to make everything by myself. And I just wanted to give the song some different approach... just to make it sound not the way a K-POP song would usually sound. That was my intention.
#deerzone:
Could you also tell us about your song "Snowball" as well? What is it about?
PERC%NT:
Well the song is actually about myself because my music is generally inspired by situations that have happened to me, which I've experienced by myself. I'm not the type of person who can write a song solely based on imagination, it better be something I personally went through. I think this is the most important part of me as a songwriter.

#deerzone:
The scene of a chemical experiment in your "Snowball" MV looks really impressive. Can you, please, explain its meaning to us?
PERC%NT:
Oh, that wasn't created by me. Actually that music project was much more aimed at creating music only. We didn't plan to do any promotion, it was just for people to listen our music. So the music video needed to be... well, short and kind of cheap but still containing a certain meaning. The song is called "Snowball", right? Doesn't it look like a snowball when one does all those chemical things? That's was the idea the MV creator put into the video and I personally think it's cool.
#deerzone:
Can you, please tell us about your participating in "Naver Hidden Track No.V"?
PERC%NT:
Yes, that was a program where they brought newly coming songwriters and put them in pairs with various producers. So the producer I worked with was Red Velvet's Wendy. She helped me a lot with my music and, yeah, that was pretty much the main purpose of the show. As a result I wrote a song called "Blooming".
#deerzone:
Which music instruments can you play?
PERC%NT:
I can play all types of guitars and a little bit of piano. I case of piano I'm only able to play my own songs a little bit. I'm not that good at it. But I'm quite confident when it comes to playing guitar
#deerzone:
Let's talk about your album "PVC". What is your favorite song?
PERC%NT:
I think the two title songs of the album, "Rabbit Hole" and "Canvas Girl", are my favorites. The whole album actually started with "Canvas Girl", that was the first song I wrote for it. This also was the first time for me to collaborate with a much longer and better know idol than me who was a real source of my inspiration. This was Choiza of Dynamic Duo. That is why the song is so meaningful to me. "Rabbit Hole" is also a meaningful track as my first collaboration with another composer. I normally write songs all by myself but this time I worked with a member of MeloMance, the pianist of the duo, and also Sumin who was featured in the song as well. That was the first time three of us collaborated with each other which is really meaningful to me.
#deerzone:
What are your plans for the future?
PERC%NT:
I just want to stay a musician forever! That's like my life goal. Because if one wants to be a musician forever he has to work on himself and always stay competent. Also one of my goals was to go to another country and perform there and you, guys, were asking if I could come to Russia... Well, that is definitely a big dream that I wish to come true one day. I do wish I can visit this country one day and perform there.
