interview

GRIZZLY

Hi everyone, my name is Grizzly. Glad to finally meet you!
#deerzone:
What is your music genre?
Grizzly:
The music that I make is pretty hard to identify with any particular genre. Many people have quite different opinions on this matter: someone believes that I do hip-hop, someone that indie, someone that ballads, some even think that I have my own group. It's just that every time I get quite different ideas and I am trying hard to implement them.
#deerzone:
How was your stage name "Grizzly" created?
Grizzly:
You know that Grizzly is a species of bears. So, in childhood, I loved bears very much, so I wanted to connect my stage name with this animal. There are quite a few other types of bears (polar bear, for example), but Grizzly, it seems to me, sounds best, so I decided to choose it.
#deerzone:
Why did you choose EGO Ent. instead of becoming an idol?
Grizzly:
I especially didn't want to become an idol. But, despite this, before I had quite a lot of auditions in different agencies. Nevertheless, I could not help but choose EGO, since one of the three people who founded this agency is my older brother. Just at one point, they offered me cooperation, and it interested me.
#deerzone:
How did your career begin?
Grizzly:
Honestly, I don't even remember. But the first release I had after joining EGO. My brother received a musical education, and at some point I also became interested. From about the age of 14, he began to take me with him, and after that I had a desire to sing and create music.
#deerzone:
You have a lot of tattoos, can you talk about them?
Grizzly:
I have a tattoo on my right forearm whose meaning is pretty hard to understand. However, if you look closely, you can see the silhouette of a man in a thoughtful pose (with a hand on his cheek). Few people can immediately make out, not knowing the values in advance. In addition to the arms, there are also several tattoos on my stomach: one in honor of the release of my first album, then the date of my parents 'wedding, there is also a cross (since I'm quite a believer), and the last one is birds, about the same like my father. I got my first tattoo at about 26 years old.
#deerzone:
We noticed that you with pH-1 are following each other on Instagram. How did you meet? Would you ever want to work with him?
Grizzly:
Sandeul from B1A4 is my friend from school and he once invited me to participate in his radio program, which also had pH-1. There we met. To be honest, I'm a big fan of his work, and then [on the radio], he liked my song. I don't have many artists with whom I would like to collaborate, but Ph-1 is unconditionally one of them.
#deerzone:
Tell us about your collaboration with Chungha.
Grizzly:
Chungha was originally a member of I.O.I, after which she released her own album. It so happened that I was on the production team who wrote the song "Week" for this album. After that, I also participated in the production of one of the songs of her mini album. And in the process of working on these songs, we began to communicate quite well. I still send her various music created by me, and she already chooses, something from her.
#deerzone:
What is more to your liking: arranging, composing or writing music for yourself?
Grizzly:
Most of all I enjoy creating music for myself. Of course, when someone else is involved in the process - this is also good, but I prefer to do everything myself. Usually, I spend all day writing songs, trying to make as much good material as possible, from which I then choose the most successful version for release. As for those songs that I did not like, I usually try to just forget about them, because over time I don't like them more and more.
Why do the characters of your songs and videos travel?
I really enjoy writing music while traveling. For example, in "i & i", I wrote when I spent 2 weeks on Jeju Island. Upon arrival, when I show the work done to the producer, similar ideas for creating a clip appear. A couple of ideas also came up after watching Netflix's "The End of ***** the World" series. "Run" was just written in the wake of this inspiration.
#deerzone:
How long does it take to rehearse with a band?
Grizzly:
We are going to a rehearsal with a band just before performances. Usually this happens 2-3 weeks before the performance and on average 2-3 times a week. One rehearsal lasts approximately 3 hours.
#deerzone:
What is your favorite songs?
Grizzly:
I have 2 such songs. One of them is called "i & i", and I like it because of the lyrics. Through this song, I kind of turn to myself as an artist, the person I want to be. And the second is "Firework". Pretty easy song that you can listen to almost constantly.
#deerzone:
During a trip to Europe, did you write anything?
Grizzly:
The first time I went abroad last year was for my performance in London. But due to the fact that I was worried a lot, there was practically no time to write songs. Then I took part in one of the SBS survival fan shows "The Fan", during which I got a lot of stress. Because of this, I decided to go on a trip to Europe for a month, during which I wrote a lot of songs. In the near future I hope to release an album and I already have an idea for his concept: I want to name each song in honor of the city I visited. But the director doesn't really like this idea, so maybe it will still change.
#deerzone:
The covers of your albums are someone's paintings or they are created specifically for you (if so, who?). How are they related to albums?
Grizzly:
The artist who created the covers for the albums is called Nuitmood. I have been enjoying his work for quite some time, and the first work that I used as a cover was the cover of Difference. Usually, ideas for creating covers for my work appear when he listens to songs. And I try not to interfere in the process, not to correct it. In the future, I want to continue to cooperate with him.
The agency wanted to give me a gift by sending the covers of my singles and album, sealed in special glass, to decorate my home. But it turned out so cool that in the end we decided to use them for commercial sale.
#deerzone:
What hidden talents do you have?
Grizzly:
I don't have any special hidden talents. I have been involved in sports since childhood, so even now quite often I am going to play football with my famous friends. I also play pretty good Baduk (a Korean national game). Beckon even has a certificate of winner of the competition in this game
#deerzone:
What are your plans by the end of the year?
Grizzly::
There is not much time left until the end of the year, but nevertheless I have a rather tight schedule, I have a lot to do. In November I plan to release a single and in December / January a new album. Also, in a week we are leaving for Europe to shoot a video. Most likely we will visit those countries in which I was (we will definitely go to Austria and the Czech Republic).
